The old village of Morón de la Frontera, situated at some 60 kms. Southeast of the capital, rises where the countryside blends with Seville's southern mountains and the first foothills of the subbetic system. It is for this reason that the municipal area has a hilly topography and the classic city with its rural style, isn't exempt of this urban testimony which denotes that it grew from a medieval nucleus, which has developed an important traditional industry.
With a number of protohistoric names, as of the third century its name was Mouror (Morón), an expression of Semitic origin, whose etymology should be related to the Mauritania colony which settled in this square, before the Islamic invasion of 711. With the palpable mark of the Middle Palaeolithic (cerro de Santiesteban - Santiesteban hill), converse remains of the Chalcolithic which go from the dolmens of la Morona (Hoya del Gigante - Giants hole), Arnijo, las Encarnaciones etc.. to the idolinos of the Iberian facture found in Lucurgentum, today near the air base. The signs of civilisations spread from the end of the Bronze Age to the Arabic era, of which the most important and noteworthy is its castle fort.
Today Morón conserves a good part of its cultural heritage, translated into beautiful mansions, small palaces,, "tithe barn" and churches which mark the historical centre, of predominantly military medieval origin. In its centre can be found the remains of a late roman church, perhaps the first paleochristian construction in Andalusia. All this immersed in a typical country hamlet, enriched by the presence of red jasper, provided by the Pozo Amargo quarry -bitter well quarry. The blacksmiths are also worthy of note, witness of an old tradition of forges, palpable in its grilles and rows of balconies, richly worked, which add an artistic charm to the urban labyrinth formed by narrow and often steep streets.
Tens of churches of very different eras and premises, the old oil mills and farmhouses, which within the strong architectural influence of the 17th and 19th century, conform an urban balance. This is part of the heritage this historic village fights to conserve, acquiring and restoring small 18th century palaces (Casa del Agua -Water house, El Polvorón - the almond sweet, la Filipenses -the Philippians , Cilla de la Victoria -Victoria Tithe Barn .) with their historical and architectural values, all of which guarantees the future of its classic countenance.
